Planting plan for a garden by the sea
The brief was to create and maintain a wildlife friendly coastal garden. Plants used were to provide food and shelter for wildlife, as well as being able to withstand the coastal conditions.
The design uses a mix of native and ornamental plants. Native plants such as Knapweed, Oxeye daisy and Wild carrot are allowed to grow and seed themselves amongst ornamental Osteospermum, Nepeta and Eryngium. These nectar rich plants provide food for butterflies, moths and beetles and the seeds provide for birds (particularly Finches).
Hawthorn, Rowan and Sea buckthorn hedgeact as wind breaks and provide berries and shelter for birds.
