The Garden in Winter

What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness. ~ John Steinbeck

During winter the garden is largely at rest and flower interest is likely to be minimal. Now the bold shapes and foliage colour of the evergreens come in to their own. The skeletal shapes of deciduous trees and shrubs and the architectural features of dried perennial stems add interest in the winter garden. Silver birches, for example are especially attractive, graceful open trees with white bark that glistens on even the greyest day.
